What is LASIK?
LASIK emerged from the development of various refractive surgical techniques. In essence, there are 2 stages of the LASIK process. The first is to create a small, thin opening in the cornea and the second is the stage of redesigning the cornea by removing a tissue in the cornea using a laser. The corneal opening is then closed again and glued together until the healing process is complete.

The basic work of creating LASIK openings in the cornea dates back to the 1950s, when the microkeratome, a mechanical metal blade used to open the cornea, was invented. Over the years, the microkeratome has continued to be refined until now, making the corneal opening process safe and comfortable.

The second technological discovery for LASIK appeared in 1980 where an ultraviolet laser was discovered which can scratch a tissue precisely without damaging other surrounding tissue. Two years later, the potential and function of this laser in the surgical field was announced.

How Does LASIK Work?
The cornea plays an important role in LASIK because the cornea holds almost all of the refractive power of the eye, where the eye's other source of power comes from the eye's natural clear crystal lens. Therefore, modifying the shape of the cornea also means changing the refractive status of the eye. This is the basic principle behind LASIK surgery and other refractive surgeries on the cornea.

To treat nearsightedness (myopia), the center of the cornea is flattened to reduce the refractive ability of the cornea. To treat farsightedness (hyperopia), parts of the cornea are sharpened to increase its refractive ability. To treat eye disorders such as blurred vision (astigmatism), the indentation of the cornea that is 90 degrees from its axis is made equal and balanced.
