INTRODUCTION

Pediatric Ophthalmology is a branch of eye health that studies the development of vision function and eye health in children. Eye health problems in children can occur from birth, infancy, pre-school age and school age. The risk of eye disorders in children can occur from the time in the womb until childhood. If a pregnant woman is infected with the Rubella virus, she can give birth to a baby with cataracts, which is generally accompanied by heart defects and deafness. Toxoplasma or cytomegalovirus infection can also cause a baby to be born with an infection of the retina of the eye called chorioretinitis which may or may not be accompanied by other organic disorders. Another eye disorder that is also commonly found is an eye disorder that is inherited genetically. Children's eye tumors are also often found, both benign and malignant, including retinoblastoma which, if not diagnosed early, is not only vision threatening but can also result in death.
